The old streets and the new estates share a postcode
West of here the suburbs were finished years ago. East of here they’re still going up, and Narre Warren gets a bit of each, sometimes on the same street.
Start at Fountain Gate and drive out from there
Everybody here gives directions from the shopping centre. It’s the landmark, the meeting place, and where the teenagers end up after school. Drive ten minutes out from that car park in any direction and you’ve covered most of what people mean when they say Narre Warren.
What you buy here is usually a family house. Four bedrooms, a double garage, a back yard that fits a trampoline and not much else. Closer to the highway the streets are older and the blocks are wider, and further back the estates are newer with the houses wider on narrower land. Neither one is better. They suit different families and different deposits, and that is the whole conversation.
Old side, new side, and the walk to the train
Most people arrive certain about one of these and leave having looked at another.
The older streets
Brick houses on wider blocks, gardens that have had time to fill in, and neighbours who’ve been there long enough to know everyone. More house to keep up with, more room to move.
The newer estates
Wide houses on narrow land, built in the most recent stretch of the suburb’s growth. Less maintenance, newer everything, and a smaller back yard than the photographs suggest. Get inside one before you decide either way.
Near the station
Narre Warren has its own stop on the Pakenham line, and how close you are to it changes the shape of your weekday more than most people expect. Time the walk yourself, in real shoes, on a real morning.

Narre Warren is on the Pakenham line, which runs in through Dandenong. If somebody in the house commutes, do the trip once at the hour you’d really be doing it. That tells you more than a timetable will.
